Vassily Tropinin (1776-1857)was born in the serf family. For a natural talent for drawing he has been identified as a volunteer at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1804 he was recalled to the new estate of Count Morkov in Ukraine, where he became an estate manager replacing his deceased father. Until 1821 he lived mainly in the Ukraine, where he wrote a lot from nature, and then moved to Moscow together with the family of Morkovs. In 1823, at the age of 47, Tropinin, already known as a talented portraitist, finally got his freedom and became an academician of painting.

Tropinin's work is well represented in the museum collection. "Portrait of Mikhail Speransky "(1839), the famous reformer of the time of Alexander I, is a "cabinet" portrait, showing an intelligent man immersed in important affairs of state. He is one of the few portraits of public figures by the artist. Mikhail Speransky was an outstanding public figure and statesman of the times of Alexander I and Nicholas I, lawmaker, the founder of the Russian legal science and theory of law, member of the Imperial Russian Academy, Secretary of the Order of St. Apostle Andrew, the teacher of the heir - Crown Prince Alexander II.

Portrait is dated the year of Speransky's death. Mikhail Mikhailovich is depicted in a modest interior of a working cabinet, there is nothing accidental, things speak the language of symbols: broken feathers - of unfulfilled reforms, fading candle - the imminent end of life, the roll of paper with a plan - that all the thoughts and deeds of the man have always been directed to the future.
